Regional economic development projects
are a crucial part of how LAMBAC helps
build prosperity in the LaCloche
Manitoulin region. Guided by our
in-depth five-year
strategic
planning process, LAMBAC undertakes
or assists in projects in a wide variety
of fields.
Here we briefly profile each of the main
projects we are currently working on in
partnership
with local community groups,
municipalities and other government
agencies. Following this is a list
of past projects we've assisted with in our
twenty-year history of community
economic development in the region.
With the completion in the coming months
of our new strategic plan, we will be
shifting our focus to a new set of
projects meeting new challenges and
opportunities for development in our
region.

Manitoulin Streams
A community-based partnership working to
rehabilitate and enhance the Blue Jay
Creek and Manitou Rivers on
south-eastern Manitoulin Island.
The project's main goals are to rebuild
the fisheries and to improve water
quality and ecosystem in the watershed.
It is the largest stream rehabilitation
project to date in Northern Ontario.
LAMBAC is chairing the steering
committee, administering a portion of
the projects funds, and coordinating the
tendering processes.

LaCloche Trails
Association
LAMBAC has joined the LaCloche Trails
Association and is working with them to
build their organizational capacity,
membership, and assist in the creation
of non-motorized recreational trails in
the LaCloche Foothills region.
Their current main goals are to convert
the abandoned railway running from
Espanola to Little Current into a trail,
and potentially to hold stewardship over
the non-motorized trails in the new
LaCloche Ridge Conservation Reserve.

Manitoulin Branding
Association
A group of over thirty businesses on
Manitoulin have formed an association to
cooperatively certify, brand and market
Manitoulin-made products. This
includes everything from crafts, art and
food to welding and wood products.
A FedNor grant which LAMBAC has been
administering has allowed the
association's Board of Director's to
engage in an extensive marketing
campaign which a consumer survey has
shown to be effective and appealing.

Manitoulin LaCloche
Events Network
More than a dozen of the main festivals
and events in the region, including
yacht races, art tours, summer and
winter festivals and many other events,
have joined together to cooperate to
enhance their success. LAMBAC is
assisting them in engaging in
cooperative marketing and sharing of
knowledge and resources.

Manitoulin Island-Wide
Waste Management Plan
In order to save money and the
environment most of the municipalities
on Manitoulin have partnered with LAMBAC to apply
for funds from the Green Municipal
Enabling Fund and FedNor to hire a consultant to develop an Island-wide
Waste Management Master Plan.
New environmental regulations combined
with many local landfills reaching their
limits make this an urgent needed
project, with the potential to create
one or two state of the art landfills as
well as advanced recycling, hazardous
waste and composting programs across the
region.

Manitoulin Trade Fair
2009 will mark our
10th
biannual trade fair for businesses on
Manitoulin Island and in the LaCloche
region. The fair hosts over 225
booths from local businesses, and is the
largest fair in the region drawing over
10,000 visitors. Considered the largest
shopping mall in Northern Ontario that
weekend., with an incredible assortment
of unique local products and services.

Manitoulin Living
LAMBAC has been facilitating
a partnership between more than a dozen
developers, realtors, retailers and
municipalities on Manitoulin to market
the Island to attract new residents to
the Island, especially young retirees.
Successful funding
applications to both HRSDC and FedNor have
allowed a marketing strategy to be
developed. This initiative follows
on many market studies and personal
experiences by locals of a growing
number of retirees and
knowledge/internet based workers attracted to the
area, which if encouraged could become a
positive influx of new community members
to our area.
